Probe of fatal fire continues
BOURBONNAIS — Kristina Thomas’ cause of death is pending toxicology results, Kankakee County Coroner Bob Gessner told the Daily Journal on Tuesday.
Thomas, 49, of Bourbonnais, was found on the south side of a three-car garage after a house fire was extinguished Monday night in the 200 block of Barrington Lane, located in the Briarcliff subdivision.
Two occupants of the home escaped the fire before three police officers entered the burning structure at about 5:50 p.m. Monday.
An autopsy was performed on Thomas on Tuesday morning.
The coroner’s office, Bourbonnais Police Department and Illinois State Fire Marshal still are investigating the fire.
“More investigation of the scene will be done in the upcoming days as we also await toxicology results,” Bourbonnais Police Chief Jim Phelps.
On Tuesday morning, the police department and village posted a joint statement regarding the fire on their social media accounts.
“The village of Bourbonnais and Bourbonnais Police Department are saying a prayer and keeping the Thomas family in our thoughts,” the statement said. “We ask that you be respectful of their privacy during this difficult time.
“Let’s be courteous as a community. Please do not crowd their street to stop and/or take photos so we aren’t interrupting ongoing investigations and daily neighborhood activity.”
