Mass. Gov. Patrick supports allowing early voting

November 20, 2013

BOSTON (AP) — Gov. Deval Patrick is backing efforts to allow Massachusetts voters to cast their ballots early.

The Massachusetts House is weighing a bill that would allow an early voting period to begin on the 11th business day before a primary or election.

Last month during a joint constitutional convention, House and Senate members also gave initial approval to a proposed amendment to the state constitution that would also allow voters to cast ballots up to 10 days before an election.

Asked Wednesday about his opinion of early voting, Patrick said he loves the idea.

More than 30 other states that already allow some form of early voting.

There is some debate at the Statehouse about whether the best way to allow early voting is by a new law or through a constitutional amendment.
