Ruiz Knocks Out Barthelemy
INGLEWOOD, Calif. (AP) _ Edgar Ruiz stopped Giorbis Barthelemy in the fifth round of their 12-round bout to win the Mitsubishi Motors Welterweight Tournament championship Monday night at the Forum.
Barthelemy fractured his left wrist in the second round and fought with his right eye nearly closed. He also bled heavily from the nose. In the fifth, a right-hand to the head sent Barthelemy down.
Referree Raul Caiz counted Barthelemy out at 1:52 of the fifth round.
Ruiz, of Mexico, weighed 146 1/2 pounds. He raised his record to 13-1-1, with nine knockouts. He won $10,000 and a car.
Barthelemy, of Cuba, weighed 146 pounds. He is 20-3-1.
In a 10-round featherweight match, Juan Manuel Marquez stopped Luis Samudio in the ninth round due to a cut over Samudio’s left eye. Marquez won every round and floored Samudio with right hands to the head. Referre Lou Filippo stopped the bout at 2:18 of the ninth round.
Marquez, of Mexico, is 24-1, with 17 knockouts. Samudio, of Panama, is 9-4-1.
