Brown coach Phil Estes stepping down

November 20, 2018

PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) — Brown football coach Phil Estes is stepping down.

University officials say Estes resigned Monday, effective immediately. He was named head coach in 1998 and led the team to three Ivy League titles.

He finished 115-94 overall, making him the second-winningest coach in program history. But the Bears have struggled recently, with Estes’ resignation coming after a 1-9 season ended with a 49-7 loss to Dartmouth.

Estes says he is deeply grateful to Brown for the opportunity to coach the team and several outstanding players.

Some players have gone on to win Super Bowl titles, including James Develin of the New England Patriots and Zak DeOssie of the New York Giants.

Athletic director Jack Hayes says the search for the next coach will begin immediately.
