Five Killed in Head-on Collision
CIRCLEVILLE, Ohio (AP) _ A man reported missing from a nursing home died with four other people when the stolen car he was driving hit another car head-on, officials said.
Charles Smith, 78, was reported missing Friday evening from Brown Memorial Nursing Home. He was driving the wrong way in the northbound lanes of U.S. 23 when he struck an oncoming car, said Linda Eitel, a Pickaway County deputy sheriff.
Smith, an Alzheimer’s patient, had been a resident of the nursing home for about a week, said Dr. Michael Geron, the county coroner.
Ms. Eitel said Smith was driving a Chevrolet Monte Carlo that had been reported stolen earlier in the day in Circleville, about 25 miles south of Columbus in southern Ohio.
All five victims were trapped in their cars, said Geron.
Killed in the second car were driver Patrick Pitt, 19, Harold Adkins Jr., 16, Delbert Murphy, 12, and his sister, Debra L. Murphy, 14. Adkins was from Lucasville, the others from Columbus.
