Schuyler rolls to Blue Machine championship
WAYNE — Schuyler coach Jeremy Hlavac couldn’t have asked for a much better end to the pre-holiday schedule for wrestling team.
The Warriors medaled in all but one of the 14 weight classes and also had nine JV wrestlers place as Schuyler dominated the Wayne Blue Machine Invitational on Saturday at Wayne High School.
Winning six of seven finals matches and adding three more wins in the consolation finals helped the Warriors easily win the 11-team tournament, beating runner-up Winside by 91.5 points.
“We love coming up here to this tournament, and this was really good for us going into the Christmas break,” Hlavac said.
One of the more exciting matches in the finals came in the 120-pound weight class, where Schuyler’s Denilson Martinez scored on a second-period escape and made that single point stand up in a 1-0 battle over 2018 state finalist Koby Ellis of Winside.
Martinez was one of five Schuyler seniors among the six champions they had on the day. Hlavac was happy with the way his seniors — including Kenneth Castro (126), Miguel Carrasco (145), Caden Yrkoski (160) and Jesus Maganda (220) — led the team.
“Our senior kids wrestled well today,” he said. “Denilson had a nice win against a really good kid from Winside, Kenny wrestled really well, Caden looked good at 160, Miguel was able to get back on track and Jesus is wrestling great and is still undefeated (14-0) and has his eye on the prize.”
Winside finished the day with nine medalists, six of whom wrestled in the finals, and a pair of individual champions in Jacoby Mann and Cayden Ellis.
Mann handed Schuyler its only loss in the finals with a second-period pin of Geovany Chacon to start the final round at 106 pounds, as his aggressive attack allowed him to dominate the match and help him to the win in a time of 3:25. Ellis followed with another dominating effort, posting a 9-0 major decision over Jaxon Smutz of Scribner-Snyder in the 113-pound title match.
“Half a point, by the skin of your teeth,” Winside coach Jesse Thies said with a smile after the tournament. “I was pretty happy overall with our effort. It’s been a while since we’ve had six in the finals and had nine medals overall. Cayden and Jacoby both looked solid today, so I was pretty excited with our effort.”
Four Wildcats earned runner-up honors in the finals — Koby Ellis, Art Escalante (138), Alex Carlson (145) and Michael Jensen (195).
Escalante lost an intense match against Wayne senior Juan Vergara at 138 pounds as Vergara was one of three Blue Devils to earn titles on their way to a third-place finish. Vergara, a state qualifier last year, pinned Escalante in 2:32 to give Wayne one of three pins in the championship round.
Cameron Muhs got the Blue Devils rolling in the finals with a second-period pin over Zak Hansen of Stanton in the 132-pound finals match. Sophomore Mike Leatherdale capped the day with a late first-period pin over Beau Morgan of Elkhorn in the 285-pound finals.
Elkhorn, which finished fourth, had two winners with Parker Harrahil and Cedric Relford at 152 and 195, respectively. Stanton finished fifth and had one champion as Issiah Borgmann won an exciting 7-6 decision over Ian Byington of Elkhorn in the 170-pound finals.
