CENTRAL POINT — Oregon Gov. Kate Brown on Saturday invoked the Emergency Conflagration Act allowing state officials to mobilize additional firefighters to battle a combination of blazes in a southwestern part of the state. Brown invoked the emergency declaration in response to the Garner Complex of 13 fires in Jackson and Josephine counties where some homeowners are under various levels of evacuation orders. BOISE, Idaho — More fuel breaks are being constructed as part of a plan by federal officials to stop wildfires in southwestern Idaho and southeastern Oregon. The U.S. Bureau of Land Management said workers this month will start thinning or removing vegetation on 448 acres (180 hectares) along roadways in Idaho with the intention of reducing flame length and slowing the spread of fast-moving wildfires. Work is expected to go through mid-October. SENT: 375 words.


MEDFORD — Julia Pinsky and her husband, musician David Pinsky, were getting ready to go to an Ashland Blues Society meeting when she walked into their home office and found their son lying there, unresponsive and not breathing.
