ROY CLARK THOUGHT HE WAS JUST OKAY AS A MUSICIAN

BURBANK, Calif. (AP) — It was rare for Roy Clark to encounter an instrument he couldn’t play. He played guitar, banjo, mandolin, harmonica, drums, piano, fiddle, trumpet, trombone and even classical guitar. Clark said in a 1994 Associated Press interview lots of people could play better than him, and that was part of his appeal. He said he hoped audiences would see him and think, “I could do that if I really wanted to put my mind to it.” He said he wanted people to see that he made mistakes and laughed about it. Clark died yesterday at his home in Tulsa, Oklahoma, after suffering complications from pneumonia. He was 85.

ROY CLARK: THE CONNECTIONS HE MADE ON “HEE HAW”

COUNTRY MUSICIANS MOURN ROY CLARK

NASHVILLE (AP) — Ray Stevens says Roy Clark “not only knew how to play the guitar and make it look easy, but he also knew how to hold his mouth and make it look like fun.” Clark died yesterday at his home in Tulsa, Oklahoma, after suffering complications from pneumonia. He was 85. Brad Paisley says he learned guitar from a Roy Clark guitar book and he practiced making Clark’s facial expressions. Larry Stewart of Restless Heart calls Clark “a magician with six strings.” John Anderson says Clark’s playing “made us practice our guitars more, all while realizing we were just trying to keep up.” Aaron Tippin says every time he talked to Clark, they talked about one of Clark’s passions: airplanes.

JOHN LENNON’S KILLER SAYS HE FEELS MORE SHAME AS THE YEARS GO ON

ALBANY, N.Y. (AP) — The man who killed John Lennon says he did not feel shame when he did the crime, but he feels “more and more shame” every year since then. New York prison officials yesterday released the transcript of Mark David Chapman’s August parole hearing. Chapman said he still thinks how “incredible” Lennon was to him earlier that day and Chapman considered just going home with his autographed album. Chapman said he had an internal tug-of-war about whether to go through with the shooting. The board denied his release for a tenth time. Chapman’s next parole hearing is in two years.

GARTH BROOKS TELLS THE SECRET MEANING BEHIND “STRONGER THAN ME”

NASHVILLE (AP) — That song Garth Brooks debuted at the Country Music Association Awards on Wednesday has a whole lot more meaning than any of us with ever know. Brooks says the song “Stronger Than Me” addresses two of the three points of his marriage with Trisha Yearwood that they argue about a lot. Brooks says the song will make their relationship better, even if it fails to become a hit.

DAN AND SHAY: IT’S “SORORITY T-SHIRT”!

NASHVILLE (AP) — Dan and Shay fans know that in the song “Tequila,” Shay Mooney sings about “a sorority T-shirt” -- or do they? Dan Smyers says when people first started writing out the lyrics, they wrote it as “a Serota T-shirt.” He says coincidentally, that’s a bicycle company in Colorado. Smyers says some fans take the joke further and show up to their concerts wearing custom-made “Serota” T-shirts. Mooney says he can say “sorority T-shirt” properly, but he sings it in “a sparkly way.”

BAND REFUSES TO LET CHRISTINA AGUILERA JAM WITH THEM

NEW ORLEANS (AP) — New Orleans musician Claude Bryant has a new claim to fame and it’s not because of his music. He’s the guy who shut down an invitation to duet with Christina Aguilera. WGNO-TV in New Orleans reports Aguilera and her dancers were in Cafe Negril last Thursday, when Claude Bryant and the All-Stars were playing. According to a video shot by another person at the club, Aguilera asked Bryant if she could sing with the band and he refused. She can be heard saying, “It’s OK. It’s OK.” Aguilera brought up the incident the next night at her own concert in New Orleans. Bryant tells WGNO he didn’t recognize Aguilera because she wore a cap pulled over her eyes and she didn’t introduce herself. He says he’d love for her to come back and she can sing anything she wants.
