VALLEY SANTA: Grandparents Raising Grandchildren Need Help This Christmas
Janet, a local grandmother, is 75 years old and raising 10 grandchildren.
She is one of a growing number of grandparents raising their grandchildren.
Statewide, about 82,000 grandparents are the sole caregivers for nearly 89,000 grandchildren and that number is increasing due to the opioid crisis.
In a letter to Valley Santa, Janet wrote that her two sons are not able to care for the children but she did not give an explanation why.
She asked for Valley Santa’s help in providing Christmas gifts for her grandchildren.
“Between caring for all of these children and my health issues, I have no extra income,” she wrote.
In another letter, another local grandmother, Linda, wrote that she is raising her two grandchildren and is in the process of adopting a teenage foster child.
“This process has turned out to be very costly as a result of all the extra resources spent for this adoption,” she wrote. “I’m afraid that my two grandchildren who live with me will go without as a result.”
Linda also asked for Valley Santa’s help in providing Christmas gifts for her grandchildren.
“Any help you could give us is greatly appreciated,” she wrote.
