Marcia Simon Weisman, Art Patron, Dead at 73

October 21, 1991

LOS ANGELES (AP) _ Marcia Simon Weisman, who accumulated one of the nation’s leading collections of contemporary art, has died. She was 73.

Mrs. Weisman died Saturday at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center, where she was taken early last week after a stroke, hospital spokesman Ron Wise said Monday.

Her collection of more than 1,000 pieces includes prints, sculptures and paintings by artists ranging from Willem de Kooning to Andy Warhol. Some have valued the collection at $100 million.

She married businessman Frederick Weisman in 1938 and they began collecting art in 1952 after her husband left the employ of his brother-in-law, Norton Simon.

Mrs. Weisman organized art donations to Cedars-Sinai and the hospital wound up with more than 8,000 pieces, the largest collection of art in any hospital in the world, Wise said.

″The theory behind it is it provides both patients and visitors with an option to the usual magazine reading you come across in hospitals,″ Wise said. ″One could actually get a fairly thorough knowledge of modern art by coming to Cedars.″
