Proposals about Maine bear population due to state
AUGUSTA, Maine (AP) — Proposals are due to the state of Maine for a project designed to get a better handle on the growing black bear population.
The state issued a request for proposals to develop a bear population model that state documents say would “inform the management of black bears” in the Pine Tree State. The proposals are due on Wednesday.
Maine has the most black bears on the East Coast, and one of the largest populations of the animals in the country. There are more than 35,000 of the animals here. The state manages the population with an annual hunt, and officials say it’s possible the hunting rules could be tweaked based on the new population model.
The state says it has not set a budget for the project.
