5-Year-Old Brought Loaded Gun To School
NEW YORK (AP) _ A kindergarten student brought a loaded automatic handgun to his school before handing it barrel-first to his teacher, who was surprised to find it wasn’t a toy, authorities said.
″Either luck or good fortune was on my side,″ the shaken teacher, Donald Miller, said through United Federation of Teachers spokesman Bert Shanas.
″I’m just saying a prayer of thanks when I think of what could have happened to the kids in the cafeteria or myself.″
The 5-year-old boy, whose name was not released, told school authorities that ″an unknown man put the gun in his pocket on the way to school,″ said police spokeswoman Sgt. Diane Kubler.
Police contacted the boy’s mother and were trying to determine where the gun came from, Board of Education spokesman Frank Sobrino said.
The teacher thought the gun was a toy when it was called to his attention by another child in the cafeteria at a Bronx elementary school Wednesday morning, Shanas said.
When Miller asked the boy for it, he handed it over with the barrel pointed at Miller’s stomach, Shanas said. The teacher took it to the office, where a custodian confirmed it was real, cocked and loaded.
