French troops put a dozen terrorists in Mali out of action
PARIS (AP) — The French Defense Ministry says that French troops “put out of action” about a dozen armed terrorists in a firefight in the far north of Mali.
A ministry statement on Monday said that French troops moved in on the group in the rugged Adrar des Ifoghas area after obtaining information about its presence.
The ministry statement said that no French troops were killed in the operation early Saturday. It provided no details and did not clarify whether all the terrorists were killed.
France intervened in Mali, a former west African colony, in January 2013 to rout Islamist extremists in control of the vast northern region and threatening the capital Bamako in the south.
However, pockets of extremists continue to roam. Some others scattered, many taking refuge in Libya.
