MOBILE, Ala. (AP) _ Kristen Logan of Mississippi was named America’s Junior Miss on Saturday night, triumphing over 49 other high school seniors by singing ″Somewhere Out There″ and winning the physical fitness category.

″I feel fantastic,″ said the 17-year-old Hattiesburg native.

Miss Logan said she plans to use the $30,000 scholarship she won to attend Baylor University next fall, where she plans to major in broadcasting. ″I want to talk to Jane Pauley,″ she said, referring to the NBC ″Today″ show personality.

Final competition Saturday followed preliminaries in several categories Thursday and Friday.

Contestants from the 50 states vied for $67,000 in scholarships. The District of Columbia and Puerto Rico, which have sent entries in the past, did not send competitors this year.

The mistress of ceremonies was actress, model and television personality Julie Bryan Moran of Los Angeles, who won the national title in 1980 while representing Georgia.
