Man shot during scuffle following argument
BULLHEAD CITY — A Bullhead City man was arrested after his alleged involvement in a fight during which he was shot.
Joseph Adam Montanez, 24, was booked into the Mohave County Jail in Kingman on suspicion of aggravated assault per domestic violence and disorderly conduct per domestic violence following an incident Tuesday night in the 1300 block of Park Lane in Bullhead City.
According to Bullhead City Police Department reports, Montanez and Robert A. Demaria Jr., 52, got into an altercation around 8:45 p.m. At some point during the altercation, Montanez was wounded by a gunshot, which reportedly grazed his back.
Montanez was taken from the scene to Western Arizona Regional Medical Center for treatment of the gunshot wound. Demaria also was taken to the hospital for injuries he suffered during the altercation.
According to reports, an argument escalated when one of the men produced a crowbar. Demaria went to his truck, reports indicated, and retrieved a .22-caliber rifle while Montanez reportedly went outside and began throwing rocks at Demaria.
Demaria and Montanez reportedly scuffled over the rifle with Montanez grabbing the barrel. The rifle discharged during the struggle.
Montanez was treated and released into the custody of police and was taken to the Mohave County Jail in Kingman.
According to police, Demaria is the father of Montanez’s girlfriend.
Demaria still was being treated for his injuries and likely will face the same charges — aggravated assault and disorderly conduct — when he is released from the hospital. The incident remains under investigation.
Montanez was being held without bond. He was scheduled to appear Wednesday in Bullhead City Justice Court.
Details of those proceedings were not immediately available.
