Franklin Mall Christmas Project boxes will be in place next week in Sandwich

November 14, 2018

SANDWICH – Red collection containers, ready for contributions of nonperishable groceries, will be placed Monday in about 20 locations throughout Sandwich.

It’s one of the first steps taken for another year of the Franklin Mall Christmas Project that was started nearly 65 years ago by the late Frankie and Peg Mall. The Sandwich Lions Club took over the project about 40 years ago when Frankie’s health began to deteriorate.

The project serves about 250 residences in Sandwich School District 430, who get groceries and a gift card for Art’s Food Market, 29 N. Eddy St.

People are urged to donate nonperishable foods such as canned meat, beans and soups; dry pastas, rice and packaged dinners; cereal; and jars of peanut butter and jelly.

The red collection boxes will be in the following locations: Ultimate Fitness, Fox Valley YMCA, Arrowhead Medical Building, United Church of Sandwich, Heartland Bank, Sandwich Public Library, St. Paul Catholic Church, Salem Lutheran Church, Sandwich Federated Church, First National Bank, Midland States Bank, Casey’s, First Midwest Bank, Art’s Food Market, Gjovik Chevrolet and Johnson’s Floral and Gift.

The groceries will be gathered and stored at the Sandwich Fire Station, with the final pickup Dec. 19, so they can be sorted and packed at the station beginning at 6 p.m. Dec. 20. They will be delivered starting at 8 a.m. Dec. 22.

Those wishing to make referrals, suggesting names and addresses of those who might want or need a box, may call Karen Spangler, Lions Club grocery chairman, at 815 786-2189.

Cash contributions are also needed. Send checks, made out to the Franklin Mall Christmas Project, to the First National Bank, Attn: Deb Hanson Krafft, 100 W. Church St., Sandwich, IL 60548, or to the Sandwich Lions Club, P.O. Box 32, Sandwich, IL 60548.
