Mexican Newspaper Publisher Slain
McALLEN, Texas (AP) _ A Mexican physician and newspaper publisher meeting with journalists at his home was fatally shot by an intruder who burst into the house and fled on a motorcycle, authorities said.
Investigators in the United States and Reynosa, Mexico, continued looking for a motive and suspect Wednesday in the slaying of Dr. Jorge Brennes, 46, publisher of the newspapers El Rio in Rio Bravo, Mexico, and La Frontera in Reynosa, Mexico.
Brennes died Tuesday at McAllen Medical Center here, about two hours after the shooting at his home in Reynosa, said hospital spokesman Raul Arredondo.
McAllen is about eight miles north of the border.
Brennes was shot four times, once each in the forehead and neck and twice in the chest, with a .38-caliber revolver, said Reynosa Police Capt. Oscar Prado.
Brennes had told friends about the death threats he had received, but many thought it was just harassment.
″All of this is still a mystery to everybody involved,″ said Jose Luis Garza, a friend and former co-worker.
Brennes was not politically active, friends said, but authorities said they would look through the newspaper to see who Brennes criticized.
Tamaulipas State Judicial Police Chief Israel Pena Lucero said five journalists were meeting with Brennes when a man wearing a motorcycle helmet entered the house.
The man asked for Brennes, and when the physician identified himself he was shot, authorities said.
The man then rushed out of the home and joined another man waiting on a motorcycle and they sped away, authorities said.
No motive had been established and investigators from the Hidalgo County Sheriff’s Department were working on a composite sketch of the assailant.
McAllen Police Sgt. Jesse Colbath said he went to the hospital Tuesday and spoke with the victim’s relatives, who had accompanied Brennes to the hospital.
″They were in shock,″ Colbath said Wednesday. ″They didn’t know why this had happened. It was just spontaneous.″
Brennes also was the former director of the government hospital in Reynosa.
