OSTRAVA, Czech Republic (AP) _ Fourth-seed Yevgeny Kafelnikov of Russia beat Australia’s Richard Fromberg 7-6 (7-4), 6-3 Tuesday to advance into the second round of the IPB Czech Indoor tennis tournament.
Slovakia’s Jan Kroslak upset fifth-seeded Croatian Goran Ivanisevic 4-6, 6-2, 7-6 (7-4) and Germany’s David Prinosil ousted sixth seed Mark Philippoussis of Australia 6-3, 6-7 (8-10), 6-3.
In other first round action, Sweden’s Nicklas Kulti overpowered Jan-Michael Gambill of the United States 3-6, 6-3, 6-2 and Bohdan Ulihrach of the Czech Republic beat Germany’s Lars Rehmann 6-4, 6-3.
Kafelnikov and Fromberg held serve throughout the first set, and the Russian favorite prevailed in the tiebreaker 7-4 with excellent returns and passing shots.
Kafelnikov then broke Fromberg in the fourth game of the second set to take a 3-1 lead and controlled the match from then on.
Second-seed Andre Agassi of the United States is scheduled to play Denmark’s Kenneth Carlsen on Wednesday.
