Bear kills Chelmsford man’s chickens, duck

September 25, 2014

CHELMSFORD, Mass. (AP) — A Chelmsford man who’s been raising chickens in town for decades has had to deal with various predators over the years, but he’s never before had to deal with a bear — until this week.

Bernie Ready went to check on his fowl Wednesday morning and found that something had forced open the door, broken down the fence and killed five chickens and a duck.

The 69-year-old Ready says when he looked into the woods he saw the bear 30 feet away still munching on one of his chickens.

He tells The Sun of Lowell (http://bit.ly/1sZBNVL ) he’s had to deal with foxes and raccoons before, but never a bear.

He took his surviving two chickens a duck and moved them to a friend’s place until the bear moves on.
