Top FBI Official was Watergate“Deep Throat”

It was not known at the time of the FDN Forum debate who was the person identified as “Deep Throat” in Bob Woodward’s Pulitzer prize winning Watergate coverage. That person was Mark Felt, the second highest ranking Official in the FBI. According to the Washington Post, shortly before his death in 2005, Mr. Felt publicly revealed that he was the unnamed source who provided Woodward with inside White House information.

The Post also described Mark Felt as having ambitions to succeed J. Edgar Hoover as Director of the FBI. According to the Washington Post, Mr. Felt thought the agency was being taken over by the Nixon White House, and he wanted the agency to remain independent.

FBI Leaks & Presidential Investigations

Most recently news reports on FBI investigations have noted that both Presidents Barack Obama  and  Donald Trump have been confronted with media leaks implicating high ranking FBI and intelligence officials that appear to threaten the future of presidential authority.
