Defending Titlists McGrath, Neiland Gain Semifinal
EDINBURGH, Scotland (AP) _ Defending champions Meredith McGrath and Larisa Neiland recovered from a mid-match wobble and defeated Canadian Jill Hetherington and Kristine Radford of Australia 6-3, 3-6, 6-3 Wednesday to reach the semifinal of the World Doubles Cup.
The U.S.-Latvia partnership is seeded two in the tournament and is expected to meet top seeds Gigi Fernandez and Natasha Zvereva in Saturday’s final at the Craiglockhart Tennis Center.
Fernandez and Zvereva, who have combined to win 11 Grand Slam doubles titles, start their bid to win the title Thursday when they meet Russians Elena Makarova and Eugenia Maniokova.
In Wednesday’s other quarterfinal, third seeds Nicole Arendt, of the United States and Dutch player Manon Bollegraf scored a 6-2, 6-3 victory over Argentina’s Patricia Tarabini and Caroline Vis of the Netherlands. They will meet McGrath and Nieland Friday for a place in the final.
The fourth quarterfinal will be played Thursday with Americans Zina Garrison Jackson and Kathy Rinaldi teaming up against countrywoman Katrina Adams and South Africa’s Mariaan de Swardt.
