David Cicilline on impeachment: ‘We shouldn’t refuse to impeach for political reasons’

May 13, 2019

Rep. David Cicilline said Sunday potential impeachment proceedings against President trump is a long way off as House Democrats are still collecting evidence.

“We shouldn’t impeach for political reasons, but we shouldn’t refuse to impeach for political reasons. We have to follow the evidence and the facts. We’re still in the evidence-collecting mode, and so I think we’re going to make judgments based on the evidence we see,” the Rhode Island Democrat said on MSNBC’s “Kasie DC”.

Mr. Cicilline said the U.S. is in the midst of a “constitutional crisis” and said the president is “stonewalling the American people.”

“It’s not stonewalling Congress, it’s stonewalling the American people. We’re their representatives trying to follow the facts and get the truth, so this is a stonewalling and a coverup and an obstruction of justice of the American people and their right to know the truth,” he said.

House Democrats have opened multiple investigations into the president, including subpoenas for Mr. Trump’s tax returns and special counsel Robert Mueller’s unredacted report.

The White House hasreferredto the Democrats investigations as an “abuse of power” and has refused to comply with many investigations.
