Trial in Mass. football player’s slaying to start
BROCKTON, Mass. (AP) — The trial of a Randolph man charged with gunning down a high school football star outside a Brockton house party nearly seven years ago is getting started.
The Enterprise (http://bit.ly/1c48csz ) reports that Andrew Robert Brewer faces first-degree murder and firearms charges when his trial starts Wednesday.
Prosecutors say the 25-year-old Brewer shot 17-year-old Jose Gurley in July 2007. Police said at the time that Gurley may have been trying to break up a gang fight.
Brewer was arrested four years later based on witness accounts of the shooting.
Gurley was a star player on the West Bridgewater High School football team, helping lead the team to a state championship.
Brewer’s attorney could not be reached for comment but previously questioned the information that led to his client’s arrest.
