February 18, 2019

Two people were killed in a fiery crash Sunday on Stellhorn Road.

Emergency services responded just after 5 p.m. to the 3700 block of Stellhorn on reports of a crash with two cars on fire. When first responders arrived, they found two vehicles, one fully on fire and one partially in flames, according to Mark Bieker, Fort Wayne police public information officer.

According to police, one vehicle had been traveling east on Stellhorn Road when it began to lose control in the icy conditions and spun around. The second vehicle, traveling west, tried to avoid a collision, but they crashed in the middle of the road and immediately burst into flames, according to Bieker.

The two occupants in the fully enflamed car were pronounced dead at the scene by medics. The driver in the other vehicle was outside the car when first responders arrived, and was taken to a hospital with chest pain in fair condition.

The victims will be identified later, and the crash remains under investigation.

Stellhorn Road was closed to traffic as the crash was cleaned up.

Road conditions in the city downgraded quickly as freezing rain moved into the area Sunday evening.

According to a news release from Frank Suarez, city spokesman, drivers were urged to use caution while driving and walking in slick conditions.

City street crews were sent out overnight to continue to salt roads and operations were expected to continue in the early morning.
