Redeemer Defense Too Much For Lakeland

February 22, 2019

YATESVILLE — John Jezorwski didn’t say much to his Holy Redeemer girls before the start of their postseason journey. One thing he did stress: Give 100 percent effort on every possession. He got that Thursday. The Royals forced 22 Lakeland turnovers in the first half, jumping out to a 31-point lead at halftime and cruising to a 64-22 victory in the District 2 Class 3A quarterfinals. Up next for Holy Redeemer is a matchup with Riverside in Saturday’s semifinals. “Our effort was there, and we did some things well,” Jezorwski said. “There are some things we can fix and tighten up. I thought Lakeland played hard, and never gave up. We really worked hard on our press all week. We are going to take nothing for granted. We have to win three games to get a district championship.” Holy Redeemer’s full-court press was suffocating, forcing 13 turnovers in the first quarter alone, and junior Sam Yencha scored 12 of her game-high 20 points in the opening eight minutes. Even though the Royals hit just 7 of 22 shots in the period, Holy Redeemer used a 17-2 run to grab a 22-6 lead after one quarter. Redeemer was equally impressive in the second quarter, outscoring the Chiefs, 21-6, to grab a 43-12 lead at halftime before pushing the advantage to 40 early in the fourth quarter. “Holy Redeemer is a really aggressive team. We worked hard and did our best, but the ball just didn’t fall for us,” Lakeland head coach Amanda Caviston said. “We practiced a lot, and we were ready for them. We just need to get stronger with our basic fundamentals. “We have a really young team, and I think this year was a good learning experience for them. They saw what the league was about, and they now understand what we need to do in order to be a threat next year.” Contact the writer: sports@timesshamrock.com Lakeland (7-16) — A.
