Prosecutor to call grand jury in 2013 police killing in Va.

April 22, 2015

FAIRFAX, Va. (AP) — A northern Virginia prosecutor says he will convene a special grand jury to hear evidence in the police killing of a man in his doorway in 2013.

Commonwealth’s Attorney Raymond Morrogh said Wednesday that he asked Fairfax Circuit Court to empanel the grand jury in the fatal shooting of 46-year-old John Geer of Springfield.

On Tuesday, Fairfax County agreed to pay nearly $3 million to settle a wrongful death lawsuit brought after Geer was killed.

Fairfax County Officer Adam Torres fatally shot Geer in August 2013 after a report of a domestic dispute. Witnesses, including other officers, said Geer was unarmed and had his hands up when he was shot.

Morrogh says he hopes the grand jury will reach a decision on possible charges by the end of the summer.
