Police officer shoots, kills dog; owners consider lawsuit

July 29, 2019

VERNON, N.J. (AP) — Authorities say a police officer responding to reports of an “aggressive” dog shot and killed the animal after it charged at him.

But the dog’s owners are threatening to sue over the shooting.

Vernon Patrolman Emanuel Rivera responded Saturday after someone complained about a dog growling and running at large in their neighborhood. As Rivera walked toward the home where the dog’s owners lived, authorities say the animal came out of the yard and ran toward Rivera.

Rivera retreated toward his cruiser and told the dog to stop, but the animal continued to aggressively charge at him. Rivera then fired one shot, killing the dog.

The dog’s owners described their pet as friendly and question the circumstances of the shooting.

Authorities say the shooting remains under investigation.
