Police Say Man Who Killed Himself Tried to Capture Death on Film

November 4, 1995

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (AP) _ A man run over by a train Friday morning apparently committed suicide and set up a camera to photograph his own death, authorities said.

Renwick D. Pope, 49, was lying down with his head across a rail when a northbound freight train went by early in the morning. The tracks are near Interstate 25 in the middle of Colorado Springs.

The Colorado Springs man was decapitated. Police were called about 10 minutes later when a southbound train and crew members saw the body.

Police said Pope had set up a camera with a timer on a tripod in an apparent effort to photograph his own death. The film was developed Friday.

Police said there was only one photograph on the roll, and it showed the headlight of an approaching train.
