FITCHBURG -- Police are searching for a man who robbed a Fitchburg convenience store Wednesday evening while threatening the clerk with a knife, a spokesman for the department said Thursday morning.

Police Capt. Steven Giannini said that at about 8:30 p.m. Wednesday, a man wearing a mask, a pulled-over hoodie and gloves entered the Honey Land convenience store on Summer Street and demanded money from the clerk while wielding a knife.

The suspect, said Giannini, then ran around behind the store’s counter and assaulted the clerk by pushing him to the ground. The clerk was uninjured. The robber then took an undisclosed amount of cash from the store’s register.

It is believed he fled the store on foot.

At about the same time the alarm was triggered by the clerk, Giannini said a cruiser drove by the store.

Several units, including a K9 unit from the State Police, searched the immediate area with no success, he said.

A description of the suspect was unavailable because of the clothing items he was wearing.

The department is continuing to investigate the armed robbery, he said.
