Montgomerie Wins Volvo PGA Again
VIRGINIA WATER, England (AP) _ Colin Montgomerie won his second straight Volvo PGA, shooting an 8-under-par 64 Monday to beat Mark James by five strokes.
Montgomerie finished at 18-under 270 and captured his second European Tour event in three tournaments.
``This round has to be, right now, the best ball striking round possibly and the best course management round I’ve played,″ the Scot said.
His 64, capped by a 10-foot birdie putt on the final hole, was the low round of the tournament, with James’ 66 the day’s next best. England’s Paul Eales closed with a 67 to finish six strokes back.
Montgomerie said two weeks ago he would win two of the next three tournaments, which he did by taking the Benson and Hedges International and the Volvo. Tiger Woods won the other event, the Deutsche Bank Open in Germany.
James, the Ryder Cup captain, is now in position to get an automatic qualifying spot on the team. However, he said earlier he would not be a playing captain.
``His wife can captain the team and he can play,″ Montgomerie said.
