Gold Coast shocks Geelong in AFL
MELBOURNE, Australia (AP) — Harley Bennell kicked six goals as Gold Coast beat Geelong 17.16 (118) to 11.12 (78) in the 14th round of the Australian Football League, posting its first-ever win over the Cats and rising to seventh place.
Bennell set up three other majors, including two of three for Charlie Dixon, as Gold Coast overcame an early deficit with eight unanswered goals on either side of three quarter time. He outshone ex-Geelong star Gary Ablett who savored his first win in five matches for Gold Coast against his former teammates.
Geelong dropped back to fifth place behind Port Adelaide, Hawthorn, Sydney and Fremantle, who all had wins. Port Adelaide stayed atop the ladder with a 9.14 (128) to 8.8 (56) win over the Western Bulldogs.
