Emergency responders check on the pedestrian struck by a vehicle on Church Street on Monday night before he was taken to Saints Memorial Campus.

LOWELL -- Police are investigating the circumstances surrounding a crash in which a pedestrian was struck by an SUV on Church Street about 9:50 p.m. Monday.

The condition of the man struck by the vehicle was not immediately available, though witnesses said he was unresponsive and appeared to have serious injuries.

The witnesses, who wished to remain anonymous, said they were headed home toward Belvidere when they came upon a female driver stopping her SUV near the intersection of Perry Street. They said the woman jumped out of the vehicle, exclaiming she hadn’t seen him and that he was wearing all black clothes.

The distraught driver immediately called 911, according to the witnesses.

Police tape was put up, blocking off the portion of Church Street between Perry and Fayette streets. A pair of sneakers rested in the middle of Church Street.

The witnesses said they heard the operator of the Jeep tell emergency responders something about the man she struck, “jumping out in front of her.”

The man was taken by ambulance to Lowell General Hospital/Saints Campus, according to emergency radio broadcasts.

Additional information was not immediately available.
