EC Commission Clears Alfa-Laval-Tetra Pak Merger
BRUSSELS, Belgium (AP) _ The European Community Commission cleared the takeover of Swedish food processor Alfa-Laval by Swiss-based liquid packaging group Tetra Pak.
An EC official, who requested to remain anonymous, said Thursday that the Commission was satisfied the merger of the two companies would not unduly distort competition in the 12-nation trade bloc.
When the Commission originally announced it was looking into the merger of the two companies in March, it said it had ″serious doubts″ about the case.
Although neither company is headquartered in the EC, the merger will almost double Tetra-Pak’s annual revenues to $7.33 billion with half coming from EC countries.
The new company will be able to offer a complete range of food processing machinery taking a product from farm to supermarket shelf.
Tetra Pak launched its bid for Alfa-Laval at the end of January.
