Religious Zealot Sentenced to Life for Hostage Terror

July 14, 1993

LOS ANGELES (AP) _ A religious fanatic known as the ″Rainbow Man″ for appearing at sporting events in a frizzy, multicolored wig was sentenced to life in prison for taking a maid hostage at gunpoint in a hotel room.

Rollen Frederick Stewart, 48, shouted end-of-the-world passages from the Bible at his sentencing Tuesday, and Superior Court Judge Robert P. O’Neill ordered deputies to subdue him.

Stewart drew three concurrent life sentences for the nine-hour standoff in September and for also threatening to shoot at the control tower and at incoming jets at Los Angeles International Airport, near the hotel.

A SWAT team captured him to end the standoff. The maid was unharmed.

Stewart, who was convicted last month, testified he was trying to herald the second coming of Jesus.

Deputy District Attorney Sally Lipscomb described Stewart as a ″David Koresh waiting to happen.″
