STUTTGART, Germany (AP) _ DaimlerChrysler AG will put its Mercedes-Benz SLR high-performance sports car into production with British racing partner McLaren Cars Ltd.
The SLR, which blends styling cues from Mercedes’ successful Formula One race cars and the German automaker’s classic ``gullwing″ roadster of the 1950s, will be built at a new plant in Woking, England. A concept version of the car was shown at this year’s Detroit auto show.
DaimlerChrysler said Friday the two companies will invest $200 million in the project. The car is scheduled to go on sale in 2003, with production limited to about 500 cars annually.
The two-seat SLR will be powered by a supercharged V8 engine rated at 544 horsepower. It will feature body panels made of carbon fiber and other high-tech materials, as well as gullwing doors that flip up rather than out.
Primary markets for the SLR are expected to be the United States, Europe, Japan and the Middle East.
