Prosecutor in chokehold case nominee for top post
WASHINGTON (AP) — As the U.S. Justice Department investigates the chokehold death of an unarmed man in New York City, the prosecutor whose office is conducting the probe is juggling her role as successor to Eric Holder as the nation’s attorney general.
The dual positions have put Loretta Lynch in a public spotlight ahead of her Senate confirmation hearings.
It’s a time when cabinet nominees normally seek a lower profile to avoid providing fodder for critics. Though unlikely to reveal details in an open setting, she’ll almost certainly be questioned about the investigation into Eric Garner’s death.
Lawyers say that while the public is closely watching the investigation, they don’t expect the attention to have any bearing on how prosecutors evaluate the evidence.
