SYDNEY (AP) — Winger Harry Novillo scored a late winner to give Melbourne City a 3-2 victory over Western Sydney in the A-League on Saturday, ending the Wanderers’ 10-match unbeaten streak.
First-half goals from Novillo and Bruno Fornaroli saw City take an early 2-0 lead before Mitch Nichols slipped a volley through City goalkeeper Thomas Sorensen’s fingers and Aaron Hughes scored an own goal from Romeo Castelen’s cross.
With five minutes remaining, Novillo picked up an uncontested ball and curled a shot past former City keeper Andrew Redmayne.
Midfielder Ali Abbas scored the clinching goal in his return from a season-long knee injury to give Sydney FC a 2-0 win over Newcastle.
In the third match Saturday, Adelaide United fell behind early on a sixth-minute goal from Perth’s Chris Harold before coming back for a 3-1 win. Sergio Cirio scored in the 27th minute, Marcelo Carrusca struck in the 47th and Craig Goodwin added the third Adelaide goal in the fourth minute of stoppage time.
On Sunday, first-place Brisbane, level on 27 points with Western Sydney, travels to the New Zealand capital to play Wellington Phoenix. City is three points behind in third place, level on points with Sydney FC.
On Friday, striker Besart Berisha scored in stoppage time to give fifth-place Melbourne Victory a 3-3 draw with last-place Central Coast.
