Woman, Daughter Killed by Train

June 6, 1999

ROCKVILLE, Md. (AP) _ A young Mexican woman visiting her fiance in Maryland threw herself and their 2-year-old daughter in front of a train Sunday, killing them both, police said.

``We’re looking at this as a murder-suicide,″ said Derek Baliles, a spokesman for the Montgomery County police. ``Witnesses report she simply went out there and lay down.″

Baliles identified them as Maribell Gonzalez, 23, and Pamela Arumada, 2. He would not identify the fiance of Gonzalez but said the man was a Rockville resident. Police were interviewing the man and his family Sunday night.

Gonzalez and her daughter were struck by an Amtrak train headed to Washington from Chicago, said Amtrak spokesman Steven Taub.

The train, carrying about 200 people, was held several hours at the site of the mid-afternoon incident, and service on that line was suspended in both directions, Taub said.
