Man charged with sexually assaulting nursing home patient
FAIRFIELD — A New York man has been charged with sexually assaulting an elderly, incapacitated woman in a nursing home here.
Elias Saldana, of Port Chester, was arrested Monday at Greenwich Hospital when he reported for an appointment.
He was charged with second-degree sexual assault, fourth-degree sexual assault, second-degree burglary and second-degree reckless endangerment. He was held on $100,000 bond.
Police said Saldana, 58, sexually assaulted the 75-year-old woman at the Regal Care nursing home on Mill Hill Terrace last year.
Police said that on Jan. 21, 2018, nursing home staff told them they had seen Saldana in the room of the elderly woman without permission. The woman had suffered a stroke two years before and is unable to move and communicate, police said. Saldana had been recovering at the nursing home from a car accident.
Nurses told officers that after Saldana left the victim’s room they noticed that the woman’s clothing was in disarray, police said. She was taken to Bridgeport Hospital where it was determined she had been sexually assaulted, police said.
Police said the nurses at Regal Care told them they had previously caught Saldana in the victim’s room and he had commented that he found the woman beautiful.
When officers later confronted Saldana, police said, he admitted being in the victim’s room but claimed she was a friend and he had gone in to pray for her. Police said Saldana denied sexually assaulting the woman but agreed to give them a DNA sample.
Police said based on DNA testing at the state laboratory, Saldana could not be eliminated as a contributor of DNA found on the victim.
