Lab leads authorities to charges in 3 rapes

March 30, 2019

The three rape cases tied to Marquise Donta Dozier had similarities.

He surprised his victims in the middle of the night as they slept, entering their homes by a window or door.

He left fingerprints behind in all three cases, leaving twice by the front door, once by a side door, court records said.

The rapes took place on the city’s southeast side, all within a mile of each other, according to the Fort Wayne Police Department.

In the two-year span the rapes took place, between 2015 and 2017, DNA was collected and analyzed by the Indiana State Police laboratory and then linked through the Combined DNA Index System, police said.

By the end of 2017, police knew the rapes were committed by the same person, but the match didn’t reveal the rapist’s identify.

However, this year, after using the services of Parabon Nanolabs in Reston, Virginia, the evidence led to Dozier, 21, of the 4400 block of Winter Street, police said.

Parabon is the same lab that last year connected John D. Miller to the 30-year-old murder of April Tinsley.

Dozier was charged Friday with three counts of rape and three counts of burglary. He was being held at the Allen County Jail in lieu of $60,000 bail.

Dozier was questioned Thursday by the Fort Wayne Police Department. Dozier admitted to raping a woman on Aug. 17, 2017, after he waited for her to come back into the living room, court documents said.

The victim told police she’d awakened to get her son a bottle about 4 a.m. and thought she heard something at the back of her house and believed it was an animal. She went back to bed and got up again, going into her kitchen and living room, cour records said.

Dozier “came out of nowhere and grabbed her by the arm,” before sexually assaulting her, records said.

The first rape happened Sept. 24, 2015. Dozier came in through an open window and awakened a woman asleep with her two children, according to court documents.

She woke to Dozier striking her in the head with a brick. Dozier then dragged her off the bed and onto the floor.

The second of the three rapes took place about 4:30 a.m. May 15, 2017. Officers arrived to find a woman crying, wrapped in a bedsheet, documents said.

Again, the victim was asleep and woke up to Dozier kneeling on her.

“Give me what I want,” Dozier said to her. At one point he left the room and the victim tried to call 911. Dozier came back into the room and slapped the phone away, then raped her, court records said.

Dozier admitted rape in all three cases, court documents said.

Fort Wayne police said the investigation is ongoing.
