Brewers Sign Mike Matheny
MILWAUKEE (AP) _ Catcher Mike Matheny and the Milwaukee Brewers agreed Friday to an $800,000, nearly four times his $210,000 salary last season.
Matheny, 27, played in 123 games for the Brewers in 1997, hitting .244 with four home runs and 32 RBIs.
He ranked sixth in the American League in throwing out baserunners with a 35 percent efficiency rate, and his fielding percentage ranked fifth.
Manager Phil Garner had Matheny and Jesse Levis share catching duties last season, and he is expected to do the same this season, the Brewers’ first in the National League.
``Phil will use his catchers the same way he used them last year,″ Brewers spokesman Jon Greenberg said. ``Both Mike and Jesse will get a good amount of time behind the plate, especially in the National League where being able to have the versatility of two catchers helps.″
Matheny was selected by the Brewers in the eighth round of the 1991 June free agent draft.
