Kosovo Woman Dies On Way to N.J.
McGUIRE AIR FORCE BASE, N.J. (AP) _ An elderly ethnic Albanian woman died today while being airlifted to a refugee center in New Jersey.
The woman was aboard a flight from Macedonia with more than 400 other refugees en route to McGuire Air Force Base, said Army spokeswoman Lt. Col. Jill Morganthaler.
She was 78 years old and had a heart condition, although the exact cause of her death has not yet been determined, said Kent Taylor, a spokesman for the Department of Health and Human Services. The woman died at approximately 3 a.m. EDT, more than five hours before the chartered Boeing 747 touched down at McGuire.
Taylor said the woman was traveling with several family members, but he did not know the exact number. Her name was not immediately released.
The ethnic Albanians were to join their countrymen at nearby Fort Dix later today. The latest flight would bring the total number of refugees staying at the center to nearly 3,000, officials said.
