Schmidt, Edwards lead Knights past Rebels

ONA — Cabell Midland dashed Tolsia, 81-61, in a Wednesday matchup of boys basketball teams ranked No. 8 in Class AAA and Class A respectively.

Chandler Schmidt tossed in 23 points for Cabell Midland (12-5) and Jake Edwards followed with 20.

Tolsia (13-5) had Jesse Muncy scoring 25 and Tyler Johnson adding 20.

WOOD COUNTY 63, CALVARY BAPTIST 56: The Patriots rallied from an 11-point halftime deficit to take a lead in the fourth period but lost in the final minutes as Wood Co. Christian scored the game’s final six points from the foul line to seal the win. Calvary Baptist (16-8) was led by Issac Massie with 18 points, one of four players in double figures for the Patriots. Wood County was led by Sam Cremeans who scored 24 points.

COAL GROVE 57, CHESAPEAKE 54: Tylan Hutchison’s half-court shot at the buzzer bounced off the rim, allowing the Hornets (13-5 overall, 8-3 Ohio Valley Conference) to hold off the Panthers (12-6, 5-6) at Norm Persin Court. Cory Borders scored 22 and Aaron Music 17 for Coal Grove. Jaylen McKenzie chipped in 14. Eli Archer led Chesapeake with 18 points. Austin Jackson and Hutchison each scored 11.

IRONTON 53, SOUTH POINT 36: The Fighting Tigers (13-5, 8-3 OVC) held the Pointers to seven points in the first half and rolled to a triumph at the Conley Center. Reid Carrico scored 14 and grabbed 15 rebounds for Ironton. Jordan Grizzle and Ethan Wilson scored 10 each. Austin Webb led South Point (7-11, 4-7) with 12 points. Nakyan Turner scored 10.

IRONTON ST. JOE 55, WELLSTON 52: The Flyers (13-5) went 20-for-25 at the free throw line to beat the visiting Rockets (3-13). J.D. Damron scored 18 points to lead St. Joe. Isaac Whaley scored 13 and Zach Roach 11. Hunter Smith paced Wellston, which made 12 of 25 foul shots, with 12 points.

PORTSMOUTH 59, ROCK HILL 50: The Trojans (7-11 overall, 3-8 OVC) outscored the Redmen 17-9 in the fourth quarter to pull away. Danny Lattimore scored 26 for Portsmouth. Logan Hankins scored 15 and Garrett Miller 13 for Rock Hill (3-15, 0-11).

NITRO 86, WAYNE 53: Andrew Mahairas made six 3-pointers on his way to 26 points as the Wildcats ran past the visiting Pioneers. Joel Sweat scored 20 and Kolton Painter 14 for Nitro (13-4). Nick Bryant paced Wayne (4-14) with 18 points. Bryen Sansom added 10.

EASTERN-MEIGS 37, WAHAMA 36: Garrett Barringer scored 17, snared 12 rebounds and made two free throws to give the Eagles (11-8 overall, 8-5 Tri-Valley Conference) a win in Reedsville, Ohio. Dakota Belcher paced the White Falcons (2-17, 2-12) with 17 points. Abram Pauley scored 10.

HANNAN 55, SHERMAN 44: Casey Lowery scored 18 and Chandler Starkey 16 as the Wildcats (6-10) beat the homestanding Tide (1-13). Andrew Gillispie scored 10. Chris Abbott led Sherman with 16 points.

OAK HILL 49, RIVER VALLEY 23: Chase Hammond (26) and Mason Darby (21) combined for all but two of the Oaks’ points in a victory over the Raiders (2-16) in Bidwell, Ohio. Layne Fitch scored 16 for River Valley.

RUS SELL 70, GREENUP COUNTY 60: Jared Goodman scored 16 as the Red Devils (8-14) broke an 11-game losing streak to the Musketeers. Brady Bell scored 14, Tristan Miller 11 and Max Cantrell 10. Brady Nelson led Greenup County (8-15) with 33 points.

SCOTT 65, POCA 54: Skyhawks junior Jagger Bell led four double-digit scorers with 20 points as Scott improved to 13-7 overall and 7-4 in the Cardinal Conference. Jon Hamilton added 16 points for Scott, Cole Moore 13 and Hunter Adkins 11. Isaac McKneely led all scorers with 24 points for Poca (11-6, 5-6). The Dots also got double-figure production from Bronson Skeens, who added 10 rebounds to go with his 14 points. Evan McKneely scored 10.

Girls

SOUTH POINT 63, ROCK HILL 23: Emilee Carey scored 22 for the Pointers with six 3-point field goals, including four triples in the first quarter. Ashley Perkey scored 10 and pulled down eight rebounds. Emilee Whitt had nine points, four rebounds, four assists and three steals.

The Pointers (15-5, 10-3 Ohio Valley Conference) play Thursday at Coal Grove.

ELLIOTT COUNTY 63, RACELAND 53: Abby Adkins scored 22 for the visiting Lions (7-15). Jasmine Ison added 16 points and Maleigh McDaniel 11. Holly Bryant scored 16 and snatched 11 rebounds for the Rams (10-12).

GILMER COUNTY 66, LINCOLN COUNTY 60: Carrah Ferguson scored 18 as the Titans held on for a win at the Little General Shootout at West Virginia State University. Grace Wellings added 15 points. Graci Brumfield paced the Panthers with 21 points, followed by Carly McComas with 13 and Kiaura Henderson with 10.
