Highlanders sign Pumas prop Matias Diaz
WELLINGTON, New Zealand (AP) — The Dunedin-based Highlanders have signed Argentine tighthead prop Matias Diaz for the 2014 Super Rugby season, adding to the multi-national flavor of their playing roster.
The Highlanders have also signed a one-year extension for Japan scrumhalf Fumiaki Tanaka, who shared the No. 9 jersey in 2013 with All Blacks scrumhalf Aaron Smith.
The 20-year-old Diaz, who made his test debut for Argentina against Uruguay earlier this year, fills a critical vacancy in the Highlanders’ squad after the loss of All Blacks loosehead props Jamie Mackintosh and Tony Woodcock.
Mackintosh has joined Super Rugby champions the Chiefs and Woodcock is returning to Auckland to assist on his family farm.
