2 arrested after man is stabbed in the face with knife
BLACKFOOT — A fight that left a Blackfoot man stabbed in the face led to the arrest of two people on Thursday.
Christian Allen Schmidt, 43, of Las Vegas, Nevada, has been charged with felony aggravated battery, felony possession of a controlled substance (methamphetamine), misdemeanor possession of a controlled substance (marijuana) and possession of drug paraphernalia.
Robin Lynn Smerdel, 34, of Las Vegas, Nevada, was also arrested in connection to the incident and charged with felony possession of a controlled substance (methamphetamine), misdemeanor possession of a controlled substance (marijuana) and possession of drug paraphernalia.
According to the Blackfoot Police Department, authorities responded to a report of a fight with injuries near the intersection of East Judicial Street and South Stout Avenue at approximately 12 p.m. Thursday. Upon arrival, personnel with the Blackfoot Fire Department and Ambulance treated those who were injured.
Authorities did not say how many were treated at the scene. However, Richard Fowler, 41, was the only person who was transported by ambulance to Bingham Memorial Hospital for injuries sustained in the fight. According to police, Fowler was stabbed in the face with a knife during the altercation.
Investigators at the scene discovered that the fight was the result of a child custody issue and that the suspects, Schmidt and Smerdel, had fled the scene before officers arrived. The suspects were later located near Smith Street and taken into custody.
According to court records, Schmidt and Smerdel are each being held at the Bingham County Jail on bonds of $50,000. A preliminary hearing in the case is scheduled for 8:30 a.m. on Aug. 9 at the Bingham County Courthouse.
