Saunders Wins Cleveland Car Race
CLEVELAND (AP) _ Bill Saunders passed Brian Simo with two laps to go and held on for his first career victory Saturday in the NTB Trans-Am, a support race for the Indy-car Grand Prix of Cleveland.
Saunders, of Dallas, started sixth in the 42-lap, 88.452-mile race, moving to third with nine laps to go behind Paul Gentilozzi and Simo. With six laps left, Gentilozzi’s motor let go.
Simo and Saunders swapped the lead three times before Saunders’ Chevrolet Corvette went in front for good. He won by 0.193 seconds.
``We decided to pace ourselves and see how the race unfolded, and try to let it come to us,″ Saunders said.
Finishing third was pole winner Michael Lewis, followed by Chris Neville and Randy Ruhlman.
