COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) _ Lightning struck a group of soliders Thursday as they underwent basic training, killing one man and injuring 14 others.

Four of the soldiers were seriously injured but were expected to survive, said Fort Jackson spokesman K. Douglas Cook. Ten others were being held for observation.

The soldiers were going through basic training in a wooded area of Richland County when the lightning apparently hit a tree and then them, Cook said.

At the time, the county was under a severe thunderstorm warning issued by the National Weather Service.

``They were aware of the potential for lightning and were proceeding to take necessary precautions to protect the soldiers,'' Cook said.

He said early tests showed the storm had moved faster than expected.
