PHILADELPHIA (AP) _ Alex Van Pelt engineered an 80-yard touchdown drive with 1:38 to play as Pittsburgh beat back a fourth-quarter comeback by Temple for a 27-20 Big East victory Saturday.

Pitt (3-4, 1-2 Big East) snapped a two-game losing streak. Temple (1-5, 0-2) lost its fifth straight.

Trailing 20-10 with 12:28 left, Temple fought back to tie on Luke Linhart's 51-yard pass to Lew Lawhorn and a 32-yard field goal by Richard Maston.

Van Pelt completed six of seven passes, including a 19-yarder to Raymond Belvin to set up a 1-yard run by Lyron Brooks, his second of the game.

Van Pelt, Pitt's career leader in passing yardage, completed 21 of 33 attempts for 259 yards. He has 10,226 career yards.

Tim Colicchio rushed for 128 yards on 32 carries as Pitt gained 462 yards. Belvin caught seven passes for 92 yards.

Pitt drove 69 yards in 11 plays following the opening kickoff, taking a 7-0 lead when Coliccio went the last 8 yards around the left side. Van Pelt set up the TD with a 15-yard pass to Belvin to the Temple 12. It put Van Pelt over 10,000 yards passing.

Temple tied it when Chris Paliscak hit Wilbur Washington with a 25-yard scoring pass 2:39 into the second quarter to cap a 65-yard, 11-play drive. It was the Owls' first passing touchdown since a season-opening 35-0 victory over Boston University.

Pitt took the lead 10-7 when Sean Conley kicked a 44-yard field goal with 3:50 left in the half. The Panthers drove 56 yards before stalling at the Temple 27.

The Panthers increased the margin to 17-7 on Conley's 47-yard field goal 2:44 into the third quarter. Van Pelt's 25-yard pass to Bill Davis in the end zone was called back by a penalty, and Pitt settled by Conley's field goal. Charles Williams set the score up by returning an intercepted pass 11 yards to the Temple 30.

Temple drove to Pitt's 12 and 19 in the second half but managed only a 38- yard field goal by Maston with 13:28 left in the game.

Pitt came back with a 91-yard drive, moving ahead 20-10 with on Brooks' 5- yard run.
