Sheriff: Hillsborough dad crashed into grandmother’s car to take infant
A man is facing multiple charges after police say he crashed into the back of a car containing his infant child, the child’s grandmother and several other kids before fleeing with the baby.
Cherry has been charged with five counts of assault with a deadly weapon with intent to kill and four counts of assault on a female. He was being held Tuesday at the Orange County Detention Center on a $150,000 bond.
On Monday around 11:15 a.m, officials with the Orange County Sheriff’s Office were notified of a domestic disturbance at a home on Trace Drive.
Officials say Cherry fought with the mother of his 3-month-old child at the home before sheriff’s deputies arrived at the scene. The mother asked the child’s grandmother to remove the child from the home for safety.
Officials said Cherry followed the grandmother’s car, which was transporting his child and two other children under the age of four.
According to reports, Cherry struck the back of the car two times, causing it to spin out of control on Coleman Loop Road. Cherry struck the car a third time before entering the car, taking his infant child and leaving the scene in his own car.
Police located Cherry’s car at a relative’s address on Phelps Road. Cherry was taken into custody without incident, and his child was found unharmed.
