Runs Raising Money For Charities, Other Causes

Start your summer off on the right foot with some extra cardio and fun for all ages.

In the coming weeks, several organizations throughout Lackawanna and Luzerne counties will host a number of races, ranging from one-milers to 5Ks, with many of the events raising money for local causes. We’ve rounded up a few of the races you can check out this summer.

 

Clarks Summit Patriot Mile

This inaugural one-mile race takes runners through the streets of Clarks Summit, beginning and ending at the National Running Center. Packet pickup will take place Friday, May 24, from 4 to 6 p.m. and starting at 8:30 the morning of the race. The first 140 registrants will receive a free Patriot Mile drinking glass. An after-party with awards and refreshments will be held at Duffy’s Coffee House.

 

When: Saturday, May 25, 10 a.m.

Where: The National Running Center, 318 Davis St., Clarks Summit

Theresa Borgia Memorial 5K

This 5K race honors Theresa Borgia, a patron of breast cancer awareness and a longtime member of the Scranton Jewish Community Center who lost her fight with breast cancer in November 2010.

 

When: Sunday, May 26; children’s fun run, 9 a.m.; 5K run/walk, 9:30

Where: Lackawanna Valley Heritage Trail, Olive Street trailhead, Scranton

Forty Fort Lions Old Fort 5-Miler

This five-mile run starts and finishes at Forty Fort Borough Park. Runners can pick up packets Sunday, May 26, from noon to 5 p.m. at Valley Running Co., 900 Rutter Ave., Forty Fort.

 

When: Monday, May 27, 9 a.m.

Where: Forty Fort Borough Park, Wyoming Avenue

Details: Preregistration ends Wednesday, May 22, and costs $20. Registration the day of the race begins at 7:30 a.m. and costs $25. For more information, visit runsignup.com.

 

Crusader Classic 5K

This fast, downhill course is perfect if you’re looking for a fast time. Both the one-mile and 5K races start and end on Truman Avenue next to Holy Cross High School, and awards will be given to top alumni and overall male and female finishers as well as the top three males and females in each age category.

 

When: Saturday, June 1; registration, 7:30 a.m.; runs, 8:30

Where: Thuman Avenue, next to

Holy Cross High School, Dunmore

Somebody’s Someone Community Day Race for Recovery

Both the Wilkes-Barre City Police Department and Somebody’s Someone have teamed up to run for recovery. Join these organizations as they aid those who struggle with substance abuse and help guide these individuals on the road to recovery. After the race, there will be food vendors, a bounce house, a mini run for kids and more.

 

When: Saturday, June 1; registration, 7:30 to 8:30 a.m.; run, 9

Inaugural Matthew’s Hope for Miracles 5K Run/Walk

This 5K race will honor Matthew McDonnell, a 9-year-old South Abington Twp. resident diagnosed with a rare form of cancer. Matthew’s Hope 4 Miracles is a nonprofit that helps raise money and awareness for pediatric cancer research.

 

When: Saturday, June 1, 9 to 11 a.m.

Where: Nay Aug Park, Bandstand Pavilion, 500 Arthur Ave., Scranton

Details: Registration costs $20 for the 5K run and $15 for the 5K walk. For more information, visit the Facebook event page.

Duryea at Dusk 5K

This combined one-mile fun walk and 5K run kicks off as the sun goes down, with walkers beginning immediately after the runners at 7 p.m. sharp. From 5 to 9 p.m., a festival featuring vendors, music, basket raffles and more will take place inside the Community Park. All proceeds raised by this event go to Northeast Regional Cancer Institute, Scranton.

 

When: Saturday, June 1, 7 p.m.

Where: Community Park, Stephenson Street, Duryea

Details: Advance registration costs $20 and includes a T-shirt, and day-of-race registration costs $25. All runners receive a race bib and timing chip. For more information, visit the Duryea at Dusk Facebook page.

 

North Pocono Runners Kids 5K Fun Run

Join the Jefferson Jack Rabbits and Moscow Roadrunners as they end their club running season. A post-race cookout will follow the run and offer hot dogs, burgers, chips and water for all runners and families.

 

When: Friday, June 7; registration, 5:30 p.m.; run, 6 to 8

Where: Covington Park, Sanko Road, Moscow

Details: Registration costs $5 for Jack Rabbits or Roadrunners kids members and $10 for nonmembers and adults. For more information, visit the Moscow Roadrunners Facebook page.

Fifth annual Strawberry Day 5K Run/Walk

This course takes runners around Clarks Summit with a kids’ fun run immediately following the race. Packet pickup will take place Friday, June 21, from 4 to 6 p.m. at National Running Center.

 

When: Saturday, June 22; registration, 7:30 a.m.; 5K run/walk, 9; kids’ fun run, 10

Where: National Running Center, 318 Davis St., Clarks Summit

Details: Registration costs $25 for the 5K run/walk and is free for the kids’ fun run. For more information, visit the Facebook event page.

 

Throop Quasiquicentennial 5K Run/Walk

Join the Borough of Throop as it kicks off its 125th anniversary celebration. This run/walk will open the two-day event, and the first 125 walkers and 125 runners will receive a free T-shirt at registration.

 

When: Saturday, June 29, 11 a.m.

Where: Throop Community Civic Center, 500 Sanderson St.

Jenny’s Kloset Firecracker 5K

Join Jenny’s Kloset, an organization that delivers boxes of food to Valley View residents and provides clothes to the four schools in the district, on this Fourth of July 5K. The top three males and females as well as the top male and female in each age group will receive awards.

 

When: Thursday, July 4; registration, 7:30 to 9 a.m.; run/walk, 9 to 11

Where: Valley View Elementary Center, 901 Main St., Peckville

Details: Registration costs $15 until Wednesday, June 26, and $20 on the day of the race. Visit the Facebook event page for more information.

 

Bernie’s Memorial Three-Mile Run/Walk

This race celebrates Bernie Hargadon, a former YMCA director and race founder who died as a result of a genetic heart condition. The Wilkes-Barre Family YMCA continues his legacy with this race that has served nearly 700 runners and their families.

 

When: Thursday, July 4, 8:30 a.m.

Where: Wilkes-Barre Family YMCA, 40 W. Northampton St.

Details: Advance registration for the run and walk costs $20 through Friday, June 28. Day-of-race registration costs $25. For more information, visit the Facebook event page.
